Pages and blocks

Create website pages, build them from blocks such as banners, featured inventory and forms, save drafts and publish changes safely.

Last updated For marketing managers and website editors Documentation for MotoDealerHQ 1.0.0-beta.1 “Assen”

Every page on your website is a stack of blocks: a banner, featured inventory, a form, a map and so on. You edit a draft, preview it, and publish when it is ready. Visitors keep seeing the live version until you publish.

Before you start #

  • You need website.manage to edit pages, and website.publish to publish, unpublish or delete them.
  • Some pages are built for you and are not in the page list: the inventory listing (/inventory), vehicle pages, location pages, promotions, the blog, team, events and careers pages. They fill themselves from your data.

Your starter pages #

New dealerships start with these pages: Home, About Us, Financing, Value Your Trade, Schedule a Test Ride (or Test Drive, for car dealers), Service, Contact Us, Privacy Policy and Reviews. All copy is generic and uses placeholders such as {{dealer_name}}, so it reads correctly from day one. It contains no made-up testimonials or statistics.

Three legal templates start as drafts: Terms of Use, Accessibility Statement and California Privacy Rights. They make statements on your dealership's behalf, so a person must review them first.

The page list. Numbers match the list below.
  1. Status. Published or Draft. "Unpublished changes" means a live page has a newer draft.
  2. Legal draft. The legal templates wait for your review.
  3. Edit · Preview · Live. Open the editor, preview the draft, or open the live page.
  4. New page. Create a page with a title and URL path.

Create a page #

  1. Open Website › Pages.
  2. Under New page, enter a Title and a URL path, for example parts-and-accessories. Use lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens.
  3. Select Create page. The block editor opens with an empty draft.

Some paths are reserved because the website uses them itself, for example inventory, vehicle, locations, promotions, blog, team, events, careers, search and forms. Pick another path if you see an error.

Edit a page with blocks #

  1. In Website › Pages, select Edit next to the page.
  2. To add a block, pick a type under Add a block and select Add block.
  3. Fill in the block's fields. Text fields with a toolbar accept bold, italic, headings, lists, quotes and links.
  4. Use the arrow buttons to move a block up or down, or drag it by its handle. Use ✕ to remove it.
  5. Select Save draft to keep your work, or Save & preview to see it in your theme.
  6. When it looks right, select Publish.

The block editor with every block collapsed. Numbers match the list below.
  1. Move, remove, collapse. Reorder blocks, remove one, or fold it away while you work.
  2. Add a block. Choose a block type and add it to the end of the page.
  3. Preview draft. Opens the draft in your theme, in a new tab.
  4. Save, preview, publish. Users without publishing rights see a note instead of Publish.

If you change your mind, Discard draft changes throws the draft away and keeps the live page. Unpublish page takes a page offline (it then shows "not found"), and Delete page removes it. The Home page cannot be unpublished or deleted.

Placeholders #

Type these in any text and the website fills them in: {{dealer_name}}, {{city}}, {{state}}, {{phone}}, {{email}} and {{year}}. When your phone number changes in your settings, every page updates.

Tips #

  • Write drafts freely. Nothing you save changes the live site until someone publishes.
  • Pick images from Website › Media. Give them alt text there, so screen readers and search engines understand them.
  • Anything pasted into a text field is pasted as plain text, so you never bring in stray formatting from Word or another site.
